Templates

A template draws one type of page. The rendering overview lists which URL uses which template.

JSON templates are the default. They list sections, and the visual editor edits them: when a merchant adds, removes or reorders a section, this file changes.

templates/collection.json
{
"layout": "theme",
"wrapper": "div.collection-page",
"sections": {
"banner": { "type": "collection-banner", "settings": { "show_description": true } },
"grid": {
"type": "main-collection",
"blocks": { "f": { "type": "filters" } },
"block_order": ["f"],
"settings": { "per_page": 24 }
}
},
"order": ["banner", "grid"]
}
Key Meaning
sections Section entries by ID: type is the file in sections/, then settings, blocks, block_order.
order The order the sections render in. Every ID in order must exist in sections.
layout Optional: another layout name, or false for none.
wrapper Optional: an element around all sections, such as div.collection-page or main#content[data-x=y].

A section entry can set "disabled": true to keep it in the file without rendering it.

templates/page.faq.liquid is rendered as Liquid, with no sections the merchant can arrange. Use Liquid templates for pages that are mostly code (a robots.txt.liquid, an FAQ built from metaobjects); use JSON everywhere else.

templates/<type>.<suffix>.json is an alternate. In admin the merchant picks it per product, collection, page or blog post (the Theme template field). Common ones:

  • product.quick-view.json for quick-view popups, loaded with ?view=quick-view.
  • page.contact.json for a contact page with the contact form.
  • product.gift-card.json for gift card products.

404, article, blog, cart, collection, index, list-collections, page, page.contact, password, product, product.quick-view, search and wishlist, all JSON.

Template Notes
templates/robots.txt.liquid Replaces the default robots.txt. {{ robots.default }} holds the default rules.
templates/metaobject/<type>.json Pages for metaobject entries; see Metaobject pages.
templates/customers/* Accepted so Shopify themes upload, but not used: customer account pages are drawn by Sooquna in the theme’s colours. See Customer accounts.
